Breathe Like A Bellow

Writer: Brenda BecherBrenda Becher

There is a lot of misinformation out there about how to breathe properly. It is important to understand the physics and the physiology of breathing. Think about your your rib cage like a bellow or an accordion. When you take a breath in, your rib cage expands and air moves into your lungs like when you pull a bellow open. This is Boyle's Law. A change in the size of the container, your rib cage, cages the pressure inside, thus allowing for the movement of air into your lungs. When you exhale, your rib cage should passively elastically recoil making the container, your rib cage, smaller and thus air will move out as when you squeeze the bellow close to stoke that fire. To get started, don't worry so much about what muscles are doing that work. Instead FEEL your rib cage move. LET your rib cage move. Note the gentle movement of air in and out of your lungs and the expansion of your rib cage as you inhale and how your sternum will fall back down on your exhale. Let's practice together. Follow along with me in video below.

Now your thinking, "That sounds great Brenda, but my rib cage isn't moving very well". No problem, we can fix that. Generally speaking breathing dysfunction falls into one of two categories. You are either restricted, meaning you have a narrow tight rib cage that does not expand well, or you are obstructed, meaning you have a wide barrel chest that does not recoil well. Standing Left Glute Push is one of my favorite PRI exercises for breathing dysfunction. It has the power to both help you expand and contract so you don't need to know which dysfunction you have, this exercise can help with both. For many of the clients, this is the first time they can actually start to SENSE the movement of their rib cage. So let's get started. Find a sturdy table or desk to place your hands on and click the video below to breathe like a bellow.

Do the seated breath work and the standing exercise daily for 30 days. Cheers to your health!
